The new Van Der Valk Exclusief Hotel in the historic city of Deventer provided the opportunity for a unique design approach. Being involved with the client and the architectural team from the onset, I was able to advise and influence the design of the hotel from presentation of its facade to its internal layout, it was a true team endeavour.
The city’s history, its medieval architecture, its industry and crafts and its colorful Scandinavian influences all played a part in the concept’s creation and emerging image. The hotel’s picturesque setting along the IJssel river and the beautiful Deventer landscape sensitively influenced the design. The tranquil nature is reflected in the creation of the interiors.
The integration of crafts in the decorative scheme was a key decision and we enlisted the collaboration of many contemporary Dutch designers. Katarina Stupavska designed the wallpapers and prints inspired by the social history of the region. Milla Novo knotted 5 large macramé wall hangings. Roos Soetekouw designed the exclusive Deventer Gobelin jacquard fabric and wallpaper. Kamer465’s beautiful Library wall took inspiration from letterpress printing and the town’s yearly Dickens Festival. Alex de Witte’s hand-crafted glass bubble lamps hover above the top floor swimming pool. Choosing and commissioning pieces for key locations was akin to creative direction for a gallery; a truly rewarding experience.
The client’s trust and collaborative approach in refreshing the Van Der Valk Exclusief’s brand was key in the success of this inspiring project.
